Your birthday was all about you. It was your party: you picked the menu (begging successfully for cartons of chocolate milk), received presents while no one else got any, were served first, got away with things that just wouldn’t do on an ordinary day.

Cake was the climax of the whole orgy of indulgence, a tangible expression of tenderness, delicious affection expressed in sugar and bright colours. Which made love seem real.
