Sweet Onomatopoeia

Like pipe cleaners, icing sugar is named for what it does – a functional onomatopoeia.

Although cake icing doesn’t hide behind a tricky name, like frosting tries to do, until you make a batch from scratch, you might not appreciate that it’s simply a pound of butter and a pound of sugar, milled into a treat so potent that it makes saliva squirt from that spot at the root of your jaws.
