Hotel guest services, promoted as the root of comfort during one’s journey, fulfill anticipated but unrealistic needs and amplify unfamiliarity. Clearly, you are not at home. These are not things you would need in an everyday way.

But, since nothing is beyond their scope, what if I telephoned to request one ivory coloured velum note-card, addressed to me and awaiting pick-up at the front desk, complimenting me on my nice outfit and advising that my night of beauty rest clearly paid off?
