“like a normal person”

November 22, 2009

Recently, M. asked me whether I ever just come home “and do nothing, like  normal person”. No coming home and cooking a complicated dinner while juggling three other tasks (laundry, writing, chatting on the telephone with my mother). No running errands till 7:00 p.m. then quickly showering before dashing to dinner with a friend. No tidying the house from one end to the other, while also gardening, putting up some seasonal jam, and drafting a menu for a dinner party the following Thursday.

No driving lesson followed by a stop-off with my instructor for scotch and conversation.

No freelancing at whatever I happen to be freelancing at that week.

No organising, no sorting, no serious thinking.

No watching “smart” films and pausing the DVD so I can jot down some ideas for future essays.

No nothing else either. Just. Nothing. Eating take-out perhaps, or surfing the Internet for a whole raft of stupid. Drawing a bath and lounging in the water till I resemble a nasty raisin.

I gave her question some though then admitted no, I don’t do “nothing”, or at any rate, I do (don’t do?) nothing too seldom for my own good. And so, I am pleased to report that this week, there are three days in my calendar with nothing penned in. And…they are going to stay that way. Feet up. Brain off (or, at least, somewhat reduced). Nothing.

We shall see.

Just for laffs, I wanna say:
Like Cockroaches are advised to stay off a certain cereal box for a short time, by all means (much against their natural drive), your mind will go: “Why man? Dude, Imma write, Imma cook, Imma go do that. Imma go wander over there, you wait and see. Why? Coz it’s sweet!”

So I’ll close with what Carrie said, when she saw my KEEP OUT cockroach warning sign on the cereal box:
    Good luck with that! HeHe.

Oh my god, do I ever hear you. Last week I called in “sick” (I was, sort of … ) and spent all day in my pyjamas watching episodes of “The Wire”. It was so weird not doing anything.

I keep up the treadmill pace consistently, but after a while it has to stop for even just one evening otherwise
    I lose

    Enjoy the unscheduled time!

Whoa…our mutual friend K. is right! You and I are the same person! I have watched so much Wire the past little while, I feel like the characters are actual people I hang out with in the evenings.
