June So Far

Wild leeks pickled in cider, from Saving the Season.

Strawberry-rhubarb preserves, adapted from this recipe, and which are probably best eaten sooner than later. Oh, jams…so very particular! I don’t yet have a good enough understanding of the rules (ratio of sugar, pectin, fruit) to tinker with things without putting everyone who eats the finished product at risk (so many rules about, you know, botulism and silent poison and such).

In winter, I swore this was the year I’d set up a proper pantry, put up massive batches of each vegetable and fruit as they came into season.

Instead, I feel a little bit like the grasshopper, playing a guitar and lounging in the sunshine while the ants hustle and keep on top of their canning and preserving schedule. Busy, busy ants. Industrious little jerks! Can’t they see how great it is to ride a bicycle from here to there…

…to head out with picnic nicely packed, (water, wine, fruit, cheese, olives and pickles, two types of sandwiches, treats for mid-afternoon) and take a brisk hike…

…to sleep late while the sunshine pours in…

…and then while away the afternoon just watching the green stuff grow?

Time to get on it, sister, before the berries pass you by!

    One thing I never want to do is let the berries pass me by!
