Survival of the Fittest

March 4, 2011

This is the city at its ugliest. A season of snow has melted, exposing a litter of cigarette butts, wind-strafed grocery sacks, unpicked-up dog poop, lost mitts, last year’s smashed bicycle locks straddling unused roadside posts, Christmas trees put out for collection the night before three storms ago and which have lain buried and out of sight till now. Road salt, road filth, grey ice and packed crap forms a rind that will not melt till mid-spring.

I am tired of kicking up salty dust and swallowing cold wind, and packing myself into a parka that no longer pretends to guard against the frost. Clearly the only way to make it through the final freeze of winter is to achieve a state of perpetual lowgrade drunkenness, and generate body heat through the liberal application of tracksuits, enjoyment of naps and bedhead, and ingestion of enough rich food to fuel a team of lumberjacks.

Excuse me while I get started…

This filthy crust has settled on Brooklyn as well. Trash and dog poop everywhere on the sidewalks and we’re all still too lethargic from being frozen to scrape it up and away. I fear that the rain that’s falling and cooling us down (again) will just make matters worse!

One remedy: have a sweet orange and a mug of tea while contemplating a seed catalog. Repeat.
